about

Included in merry6mas2021 (old roads new paths) was a track called 'slow grey'. Shortly after this was released, I thought it would be interesting to take the end section of this piece, slow it down and loop it, and play over. This is available on Bandcamp as 'slow grey (extended)'.
for my first live show in a few years, i came to the idea of doing a version of slow grey as the entire set. This took the ideas of the original, and the extended versions, and joined them to make a single 30 minute piece. Not quite the same as either, here it is.

The performance was recorded direct into Ableton Live using Mobius looper. This direct recording has been mixed with a recording made from the room using a portable Tascam recorder.

Aside from some stereo spread of the individual parts, and a bit of eq, there has been no editing.
The playing isn't perfect, and neither is the sound (a bit overloaded in parts), but i feel it's worthy of wider listening.

On listening back, i thought the rhythm in the first section, created by tapping the guitar strings, sounds vaguely reminiscent of the 1973 record 'Why Can't We Live Together' by Timmy Thomas (who died on 11 March 2022). This is not intentional, but a song worth listening to.

The previous versions of slow grey have been included in this album for the full experience.

Thanks to Jez Creek for organising the Church of Sound evenings and asking me to play. The cover shot is a video capture by Nick Robinson. Thanks to Anthony Bloxham for the close up photos.

Yellow6 is the solo project of British guitarist Jon Attwood. Yellow6 has at times been described as post-rock, minimalist, electronica, ambient… the reality is that Yellow6 has some similarity with each of those genres but is not so easily definable, using aspects of drone, repetition, melody, harmony, noise and silence to create absorbing soundscapes to drift off into ... more
